These Surf Dogs Catching Big Waves Is What Life Is All About

You may not be aware of this, but every year Surf City hosts a Surf Dog contest and it's everything. The event saw 68 surfing dogs converging Sunday on Huntington Beach. The eight annual contest not only shows off canine surf skills but also raises money for nonprofit rescue groups. The three-day event began on Friday with a photo exhibit of surfing dogs at the Rainwater Gallery and Events Center in Huntington Beach. On Saturday, doggies got aboard stand-up paddleboards in the Newport Harbor. But Sunday was the big show, with audience members clutching cameras lining the beach to capture the crazy wipeouts and epic rides. Spectator Tom Baker said:
“It’s a crackup watching the dogs. The people think the dogs are enjoying it, but I’m not so sure the dogs are enjoying it today. The surf was heavy. People were getting knocked down and washed all around. It’s like a washing machine in close. ... Some of the dogs have sheer panic on their faces and they can’t wait to get off the boards.”
