David Ayer Confirms, ‘Gotham Sirens’ Is Moving Along In Development

It’s been a rocky few years for DC and Warner Bros. Wonder Woman was a hit, but Justice League reminded us of how bad Suicide Squad was. Despite having plans for solo movies for Aquaman and Harley Quinn, another group movie is still undecided but, according to David Ayer, Gotham City Sirens isn’t one of them.

One year ago, DC and Warner Bros announced that they were developing an adaptation of Paul Dini’s limited run comic as the next appearance for Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. And then the talks sort of died down, but just because there hasn’t been any news about that female-centric Gotham City Sirens movie from DC Films in a while doesn’t mean that it’s been dropped.

As of late, the film has gone through a series of behind-the-scenes changes (particularly with screenwriters) over the course of its development, and while those may have slowed it down, it appears that things are chugging along.

The project is essentially an easy introduction into other Batman Family anti-heroines, like Catwoman and Poison Ivy, in a storyline that would potentially pit them against Gotham City crime boss Black Mask. Then we heard some rumors, that the film adaptation would have them face off against the more heroic Birds of Prey (in the comics, this commonly consisted of Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress), which could go a long way towards expanding further on the Gotham side of the DCEU.

Some fans have been disheartened to not have heard much about the project in recent months, but David Ayer’s comments at the Bright junket feel like an encouraging reminder that it’s still being workshopped at the studio. Suicide Squad director David Ayer was linked to make the Gotham City Sirens live-action film, but he hasn’t said much in recent months since he chose to focus on Netflix’s Bright first. Which is currently tanking, sadly.

But rest assured that Gotham City Sirens isn’t dead. Ayer himself has confirmed to Collider that the project is very much still “in development”, but wouldn’t divulge any further details. With Sirens, it’s hard to tell where Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will fit into the DCEU next. She’s integral to the Gotham City Sirens storyline, as she’s one of three “Sirens”, but she’s also currently attached to a Joker/Harley spinoff movie and a Harley solo movie.

That list also includes her commitment to Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2. Margot clearly cannot be in that many places at once, which means that every movie to potentially feature her will need to wait once she makes a choice for a project. A few weeks ago, Robbie mentioned in an interview that she has spent the last year developing yet another Harley Quinn project as well.

“I mean it’s hard to kinda talk about it because all this stuff is under lock and key, but yeah I’ve been working on a separate spin-off for Harley for a while now,” she explained.

Robbie then admitted:

“Honestly, I don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen, but I think everyone is keen to getting Harley back on screen so everyone is working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”

Well, at least they’re talking about it.
